WorkCover NSW accused of bullying its workers

Posted on March 13, 2011 in Bullying in the News by admin

Isn’t it sad – and ironic – that WorkCover NSW has been accused of bullying its workers? An independent enquiry has found widespread persecution, with 311 of the 1,312 employees claiming they had suffered bullying or harassment, including sexual harassment and racism, threats and acts of violence, the deliberate sabotaging of work, being ostracised, kept under surveillance, humiliation, nit-picking, unjustified criticisms or inequitable treatment.

Managers and supervisors were said to be responsible in the majority of cases, with other employees and clients also being blamed.

The investigation was ordered by government ministers in September 2010 after serious concerns were raised in the NSW parliament about a culture of entrenched bullying within WorkCover.  The report made a series of recommendations, including new training for managers and staff and a revised anti-bullying policy, and hopefully this will help.

But it makes me wonder, what hope do other workplaces have of eliminating bullying within their ranks when even a government agency responsible for dealing with workplace bullying can’t get it right?
